French and Francophone Studies (C034)
GEC Coordinator: Mary Rice-DeFosse
This interdisciplinary concentration encompasses the language, literatures, and cultures of the French-speaking world. It aims to develop increased linguistic proficiency in oral and written French and knowledge of the rich cultural production of the French-speaking regions of the globe over time using a variety of critical approaches.
Complete four credits designated with the (C034) GEC attribute; one of which must be from the Language list, one of which must be from the Literature and Film list, and one of which must be from the Culture and Civilization list. Only one of the following courses, taught in English, may be counted toward the concentration: FYS 318 or CMS 102 Medieval Worlds/HIST 102 Medieval Worlds. One co-curricular component may be substituted for one of the courses from the Language or Culture and Civilization lists. Co-curricular components include applicable internships, supervised research, projects, or fieldwork; a supervised performance experience; or supervised volunteer work or community work-study. One non-Bates course may be applied toward the concentration if judged comparable to one of those below by the concentration coordinator and with prior approval. This concentration is not open to students who have declared a major or minor in French.
