Courses Taken Outside of Bates

Study Abroad

Studying abroad in Europe is encouraged, but not required, to complete the major. 

Classes of 2026, 2027, and 2028

Up to four courses from approved study-abroad programs may be counted toward the language or elective courses, with the approval of the program committee. 

Class of 2029 and Beyond

Students may count a maximum of three credits for one semester of study and five credits for two semesters of study from an approved study-abroad program toward the completion of the major. Courses taken while studying abroad may be counted toward the language or elective courses, with the approval of the program committee.

Pass/Fail

Students may count either one 100- or 200-level elective or one 200-level language course taken Pass/Fail toward the major.

Restricted Declarations

Students who have declared the European Studies major may not declare the following:

  • European Studies minor

Other Considerations

Short Term

One of the three elective courses may be a short term.

Double-Dipping

Students may count up to four courses taken for another major or minor toward the European Studies major.
