Chinese Minor

Minor Requirements

The minor consists of a minimum of seven courses that must include the following:

Language

Complete six courses from the following:

CHI 101Beginning Chinese I
CHI 102Beginning Chinese II
CHI 201Intermediate Chinese I
CHI 202Intermediate Chinese II
CHI 301Upper-Level Modern Chinese I
CHI 302Upper-Level Modern Chinese II
CHI 401Advanced Chinese
CHI 415Readings in Classical Chinese
CHI 450Special Topics in Advanced Chinese

CHI 450 is a topics course and may be repeated to reach the six-course requirement.

Literature or Culture

Complete at least one course from the following:

  • Any CHI courses, excluding CHI 101, 102, 201, 202, 301, 302, and 401.
  • Any courses designated with the (CHI: Cultural) attribute.

Students may apply CHI 415 Readings in Classical Chinese and CHI 450 Special Topics in Advanced Chinese to the Literature or Culture requirement only when taken after the Language requirement is complete.

Courses Taken Outside of Bates

A student may petition to have up to three comparable courses, completed at other institutions in the United States or abroad, apply toward the minor.

Pass/Fail

Pass/Fail grading may not be elected for courses applied toward the minor in Chinese.

Restricted Declarations

Students who have declared the Chinese minor may not declare the following:

  • Asian Modernity (C053) GEC
  • Asian Narrative Traditions (C052) GEC
  • Chinese major
  • Chinese Language (C044) GEC
  • Chinese Society and Culture (C047) GEC

Other Considerations

One Short Term course may be applied toward the minor in Chinese.

Minors in Chinese may count no more than one course toward both their Asian Studies major or minor and their minor in Chinese.
