Asian Studies Minor
Minor Requirements
The Asian Studies minor comprises six courses. In consultation with their minor advisor and in accordance with program guidelines, students may design their own course of study.
Complete at least six courses from the following:
- Any Asian Studies (ASIA), Chinese (CHI), and Japanese (JPN) courses
- Any First-Year Seminar (FYS) designated with the (CHI: Cultural), (JPN: Cultural), or (ASIA: Breadth) attribute
The minor may include a maximum of four courses from the Chinese and Japanese language sequences.
Courses Taken Outside of Bates
With the approval of the minor advisor, students may apply up to two courses taken on study-abroad programs toward the minor, as well as courses taken on Bates Fall Semester Abroad programs in Asia.
Pass/Fail
Pass/Fail grading may not be elected for courses applied toward the minor in Asian Studies.
Restricted Declarations
Students who have declared the Asian Studies minor may not declare the following:
- Asian Studies major
- Asia Art and Literature (C033) GEC
- Japanese Society and Culture (C046) GEC
- Asian Narrative Traditions (C052) GEC
- Asian Modernity (C053) GEC
- South Asian Studies (C087) GEC
Other Considerations
Up to two Short Term courses may count toward the Asian Studies minor.
Students may petition for any other course with a clear Asia focus but not explicitly cross-listed in Asian Studies to count for the Asian Studies minor.
Majors and minors in Chinese or Japanese may count no more than one course toward both the Asian Studies minor and their major or minor.
