Academic Catalog

The Human Body (C027)

Concentration Coordinator: Bruno Salazar-Perea

The Human Body concentration examines the human body through an interdisciplinary lens that integrates the natural and social sciences, the arts, and the humanities. Students explore the human body's structure, function, development, expression, and experience across multiple dimensions, from molecules and cells to behavior, identity, culture, society, and movement.

Drawing on disciplines including art, biology, culture and religion, dance, music, neuroscience, psychology, sociology, and theater, the concentration encourages students to understand the body not only as a biological system but also as a social, cultural, creative, and lived experience. Students examine how bodies move, communicate, heal, perform, adapt, and are understood across different historical, scientific, and cultural contexts.

The concentration emphasizes critical thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration. Through coursework, laboratory experiences, performance and creative exploration, community engagement, and research opportunities, students develop a broad, integrated understanding of the human body and its relationship to health, identity, expression, and well-being. The concentration prepares students for careers and advanced study in healthcare, the biomedical sciences, neuroscience, public health, psychology, movement sciences, education, the arts, and other interdisciplinary fields connected to the study of the human experience.
