Concentration Coordinator: Emily Kane

This concentration is designed to recognize and cultivate two elements of the College’s mission: informed civic action and responsible stewardship of the wider world. The concentration focuses on coursework and other learning experiences related to civic and community engagement at the local, state, regional, national, and global level.

Concentration Requirements

Complete four courses designated with the (Community-Engaged Learning)* attribute, with the following caveats: the courses must be offered in at least three departments or programs, and students must participate in occasional reflection activities if requested by the Harward Center for Community Partnerships.

Courses Taken Outside of Bates

One non-Bates credit may be applied toward the concentration with prior approval by the concentration coordinator.

Declaration Restrictions

Bates Default: Students who have declared this concentration may declare any other major, minor, or concentration.

Other Considerations

One independent study or thesis credit, pre-approved by the Harward Center, may count toward the concentration. One course may be replaced by a co-curricular experience approved by the Harward Center (guidelines for the process of approval are available on the Harward Center website).
