Business Analytics (C095)

Concentration Coordinator: Paul Shea

This concentration examines the intersection of business and the liberal arts. Students acquire an understanding of market dynamics and learn how successful businesses anticipate and respond to evolving economic, technological, and societal shifts. Students develop skills in data collection and analysis, and how these impact strategic decision-making.

Complete the requirements outlined below, with the following restrictions: only two courses from an academic unit may be applied to the concentration; only one course may be applied to both a major and this concentration; only one statistics course may be applied to the concentration (MATH 213, ECON 250, PSYC 218, and SOC 206).

Concentration Requirements

1. Introductory Economics

Complete one course from the following:

  • ECON 154 The Global Economy: Trade, Finance, and Policy
  • ECON 155 Economics of Financial Markets
  • ECON 156 Unemployment, Inflation, and Wealth

2. Statistics, Programming, or Numeracy

Complete one course from the following:

  • DCS 105 Calling Bull: Data Literacy and Information Science
  • Any DCS Introduction to Computer Science course
  • DCS 117 Introduction to Data Science and Statistics
  • DCS 211 Computing for Insight
  • DCS 229 Data Structures and Algorithms
  • ECON 250 Statistics
  • MATH 117 Introduction to Data Science and Statistics
  • MATH 213 Introduction to Probability and Statistics
  • PSYC 218 Statistics
  • SOC 206 Introduction to Statistics for Sociology

3. Additional Course

Complete one course from the following:

  • An additional Statistics, Programming, or Numeracy course listed above
  • An additional ECON 150-159 course
  • DCS 375 Network Science and Analysis
  • NRSC 357 Computational Neuroscience/Lab
  • PLTC 125 States and Markets
  • PLTC 284 The Political Economy of Capitalism
  • SOC 260 Economic Sociology

4. Business, Management, Accounting, or Finance

Complete one course from the following:

  • EXDS S16E Practicum in Business Consulting: Bates-Tuck Business Consulting Essentials
  • Transfer credit - approved by concentration coordinator

Courses Taken Outside of Bates

Prior to enrolling in a transfer course, students must seek pre-approval from the equivalent Bates department/program chair and the concentration coordinator. If there is no equivalent Bates department/program, students must seek pre-approval from Associate Dean of Faculty, Mike Rocque. Transfer credit for courses in marketing, management, entrepreneurship, accounting, (pure) finance, or operations research may be applied to #4. Students may also apply transfer credit to elements #1-3 if the concentration coordinator judges that they are a direct equivalent to an applicable Bates class (e.g., an Economics Statistics course taken away from Bates may be applied to #2). The coordinator may use their discretion to approve other courses that include a sufficient business component to satisfy element #4. Transfer courses in economics, statistics, or computer science shall not typically be approved.

Declaration Restrictions

Students who declare the Business Analytics C095 concentration may not declare the following:

  • International Business C096 concentration
