Academic Holds

Financial Hold

Student Financial Services places a financial hold on any student account with a past due balance exceeding $5,000, which immediately prevents the student from registering for courses. Past due balances may also bar a student from returning to Bates for a subsequent semester. Students carrying a past due balance should contact Student Financial Services directly to discuss their account and establish a plan to resolve the outstanding balance.

Major +1 Hold

Students are required to declare a major and a second area of study, which may include a second major, a minor, or a concentration, in Garnet Gateway by March 1 of the Sophomore year. Students who have not declared a major and a secondary program of study by the deadline will receive a Major +1 hold and be unable to register for courses until the Major +1 is declared.

Registration Hold

In advance of each designated advising period, a registration hold is placed on all students. Students must meet with their major advisor(s) during the advising period to plan their enrollment for the upcoming semester. Once the student and advisor meet, the advisor will lift the hold, and the student will be able to register for courses. Only the student’s major advisor, or one of their major advisors if the student has more than one major, can lift this hold.

Support Action Accountability Hold

Students are required to complete the Support, Action, and Accountability training in Garnet Gateway at the start of each academic year, in accordance with the policies defined by the Office of Community Standards. Students who do not complete the training will receive a Support Action Accountability hold and be unable to register for classes until the training is completed.
